  6. Minutes of the Chassis MIB Working Group (CHASSIS)

  8. The Group reviewed and approved the Agenda.  The current draft document
  9. is dated January 27, 1993.

  11. Revised Model for the Chassis MIB
  12.  
  13. Dave Arneson presented a revised model for the Chassis MIB. It consists
  14. of three kinds of things within a chassis - modules, resources, and
  15. entities.  Each resource is used to build up a single module;
  16. independently each resource is used to build up a single entity.  The
  17. first relationship is used to describe the physical location of a
  18. resource.  The second relationship is used to describe the logical
  19. functional unit for management access.

  21. There are three primary tables in the model:

  24.   1. A module table indexed by location type and slot number.
  25.   2. A resource table indexed by loc-type, slot-#, and resource-#.
  26.   3. An entity table indexed by entity number.

  29. There was some discussion that the resource table should be two logical
  30. tables:  one indexed by module information, and the other indexed by
  31. entity information.  There was general consensus that the model is an
  32. improvement, and reasonably general.

  34. There was a discussion of whether we are modeling chassis configuration
  35. or network topology.  The general consensus seemed to be that network
  36. topology is a general problem and is not part of our requirement.

  38. A remaining question was what access information is necessary for v1 and
  39. v2.

  41. Implementation Experience
  42.  
  43. Rick Royston discussed implementation experience.  He was concerned that
  44. indexing was difficult, but thought that the new model would help.  He
  45. was also concerned about keeping the management application informed
  46. when the chassis configuration changed.  Finally, there was concern
  47. about dynamic rules for what card is allowed to go in which slots.
